A cancer diagnosis can alter nearly every part of daily life. Alongside medical appointments and treatment decisions, patients and their families may face financial pressures at a time when their attention needs to remain on care.

The Kirtland Cancer Foundation helps ease that burden for people in Venango County and surrounding communities. The foundation provides prompt charitable assistance, helping local families manage financial challenges associated with cancer treatment.

Assistance Centered on Local Patients
Dr. Howard H. Kirtland III and Barbara G. Kirtland established the Kirtland Cancer Foundation in 2005 after recognizing that people undergoing treatment often needed timely financial help. Dr. Kirtland practiced oncology and hematology in Franklin, and the foundation developed from the couple’s experience caring for people affected by cancer.

The organization assists cancer patients and their families regardless of where treatment takes place. Its services are not limited to a particular hospital, medical practice or health system. A quick approval process helps reduce delays so patients can concentrate more fully on their treatment and well-being.

The foundation also helps ensure that people know assistance is available close to home. Sharing that information can be especially valuable for families who may not realize that local help exists or who are uncertain about asking for support.

Pink Splash for the Cure
Pink Splash for the Cure brings this work into public view through one of Franklin’s most recognizable annual traditions. Held in the city each year since 2008, the event centers on adding pink dye to the Egbert Fountain in Fountain Park.

The pink fountain becomes a visible reminder of breast cancer awareness and the experiences of patients, survivors and families remembering loved ones. Past gatherings have included speakers, survivor recognition, raffles, T-shirt sales and opportunities for community members to stand alongside people affected by cancer.

Pink Splash for the Cure was founded by local cancer survivor and Kirtland Cancer Foundation board member Michelle “Shelly” Hartle. The event supports breast cancer awareness and research and has raised funds benefiting the foundation’s local work.

Supporting Our Community Cause
